They are full of energy and frequently include unrelated doodles and observations from daily life.
Fred draws on pretty much anything. An interesting background can lead to compositional opportunities which elevate a piece. The environmental aspect is also part of Fred's ethos. He often draws on gridded or lined paper, a relic of his career in architecture.

If a commission isn't your thing, contact Fred to see what is available in his paperback and curios line.
All original pieces of art, the subject, medium and other variables may differ from piece to piece.
The paperback range adds meaning and new value to once cherished paperbacks. The final decision is up to you but these are the only originals where Fred would recommend his own framing solution. He has tried to keep this cost effective.
Fred's approach to art is defined by his love of drawing and intaglio printing. He uses line to produce work imbued with expression and character. He frequently draws using the humble Bic biro, a medium suited to his style, which introduces a character of its own. He also works in ink, charcoal, pencils and washes.
He is attracted to the dynamism of preliminary studies and sketches rather than the final piece of art seen in galleries. The energy, expression and economy of line in a sketch or life drawing can be powerful, descriptive and beautiful. Fred rarely seeks completeness in his pieces, favouring energy and playfulness.
The influence of photography is also evident in Fred's work. Good photography captures the character of a subject in a frozen moment, a quality difficult to achieve in portraiture. He enjoys the dynamic composition opportunities and lens distortion photography affords. Fred distills these qualities into his work to create a vitality to his pieces.
Importantly, photography is an influence which adds layers of richness to his art practice. It is not an essential tool, Fred does not trace, Photoshop or blindly copy from photographs. He prefers drawing from life but the influence of photography is present.
Fred lives in beautiful countryside close to the border of England and Wales. This location often filters into his work. Context, an important factor in his architectural career, is a theme he regularly visits as he explores 'sense of place'.
